The civil rights movement gained momentum throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The U.S. Supreme Court declared school segregation unconstitutional in Brown v. Board of Education; Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus and sparked a bus boycott; the Freedom Rides drew attention to the problem of segregation; and the passage of the Voting Rights Act led to a dramatic increase in the number of African American voters in the South. In which states did the increase in African American voters between 1960 and 1970 probably have the greatest impact?
