The Great Liberator -- Independence Leader, Caudillo, and Future President Simón Bolívar
Simón Bolívar led South America's independence movement and emerged afterward as the most well-known hero on the continent. Despite the popularity and respect that accompanied him, he was unable to prevent Latin America from degenerating into political and social instability. The former proponent of republicanism ended his life as a dictator, convinced that his countrymen were not yet ready for the full freedom of self-rule.
