In 1949 the United States and its Western Allies formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to confront the perceived threat from the Soviet Union and its allies (the Warsaw Pact). An "Iron Curtain" divided the continent of Europe into East and West. Germany, defeated during World War II, was partitioned between the two rival blocs. Berlin, the German capital, was also divided into four occupation zones. How might this arrangement have led to friction after 1950?
